A playwright is at the end of a long, fruitless day of auditions for his adaptation of a notorious 19th-century novel when Vanda bursts in: late, loud, and seemingly all wrong for the part. Then she begins to read, and the line between actor and character, director and subject, begins to blur. David Ives’s electrifying two-hander is a funny, seductive, and unsettling battle of wits about power, desire, and who is really in control.
Rated R for sexual situations, strong language, and simulated violence.
